2 Montgomery men arrested in connection to Auburn burglary, robbery

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Two Montgomery men have been arrested in connection to a burglary and a robbery in Auburn.

According to Auburn Police Division Captain Lorenza Dorsey, Joseph L. Smith, 39, and Alton L. Surles, 44, were arrested and charged with first degree robbery, third degree burglary and first degree theft of property.

Smith and Surles are suspects in two separate incidents that happened on Friday and Monday. On Friday, a business in the 3900 block of Cox Road was burglarized. Over $3,000 in merchandise was stolen.

On Monday, a robbery was reported at a convenience store in the 1800 block of West Longleaf Drive. Officers responded to an alarm at the store, and an employee said two men entered, jumped over the counter and forced her to open the cash register, taking cash and merchandise.

Surveillance video at both sites showed a suspect vehicle and two suspects. While out on patrol Tuesday morning, an officer saw a vehicle matching the suspect vehicle description and made a traffic stop. Smith and Surles were in the vehicle and were arrested after police say they identified them as the men in the surveillance video.

The two men were taken to Lee County Jail, where they are being held on a $108,000 bond.
