MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Alabama's new superintendent is one step closer to taking over his new role.
A state school board committee approved the contract of Dr. Eric Mackey, 2 to 1. The dissenting vote was cast by Vice President Stephanie Bell.
"Bottom line, at the end, it will be a potentially $400,000 package," Bell said. "I just don't see that the taxpayers at this point can support that type of commitment. It leans toward the employer, and not for the benefit of the employee as well. I think it's problematic starting off and I'm disappointed that that is the case."
The full board will vote on the contract Thursday morning.
