DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency will be cracking down on motorists this Memorial Day weekend.

With an estimated 37 million people expected on the roadways this weekend, according to AAA, ALEA is increasing its patrol all across the state and that includes down in Dothan.

"Expect us to be out there in full force this weekend," said Capt. Tracy Nelson. "We do have quite a few details planned to combat aggressive driving, driving under the influence, and people who are just out there not wearing their seat belts."

With Dothan being on the way to the beaches in Florida, it's a safe bet to expect delays across the Circle City.

"Everybody's coming down Alabama," said Nelson. "They're heading to Panama City. It's one of the biggest destinations around as far as Memorial Day weekend. Understand there's going to be delays. Don't get upset. Road rage happens. Let's ignore that. Don't do that."

Some of the main congested areas in Dothan will be around the major highways, Highway 431 and Highway 231. So if you're going to be out and about during the weekend, if you know a different way, it might be best to take an alternate route.

"Stay off the major thoroughfares coming in and out of Dothan, especially if you're someone locally and you know the area. It's best to stay away from 231 and 431," said Nelson. "There's so much congestion that will happen throughout this weekend on those roadways."

If you do have to get out and travel over the next few days, give yourself enough time to arrive on time by possibly leaving around an hour earlier.
