AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - Recently we have been seeing a lot of warm, moist weather, the perfect combination for fleas and ticks.

During this time of year it is common to see an uptick in fleas and ticks. With more people planning to be outside to enjoy the warmer weather over the next few months, it's important to protect both yourself and your pets.

"Fortunately for our pets, we have really good safe options that can be used year-round for dogs and cats. We just have to be careful, some that are use for dogs aren't necessarily safe for the cats. But they have great options to protect them not only against fleas and ticks but maybe even mosquitoes, and some of these products also protect against heart worms and other parasites as well. For people it's a little more difficult. The drugs are far more limited. Bug spray like Off that contains deet and then permethrin that we can soak in our clothes, but we don't have as many drug options," said assistant professor of Parasitology Lindsay Starkey.

Although we may notice the fleas and ticks more during the spring and summer months, veterinarians say that, especially in the South, they can be a year-round problem.

If you do find a flea or tick on your skin or on your pet, safely remove it and save it in a bag to be looked at by your doctor or veterinarian.
