DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The Dothan Police Department says a man wanted in connection with a child's homicide investigation in that city is being treated at a Florida hospital after being shot by Florida law enforcement.

Dothan police have not yet released any other details about the case involving Carlton James Mathis, 28, but authorities in Florida have been able to shed some additional light on the incident.

According to the Levy County Sheriff's Office in Florida, just after 8:30 p.m. Sunday, the Alachua County Sheriff's Office (Florida) received a report from the Hall County Sheriff's Office in Georgia, regarding a suspect involved in the murder of a 6-year-old child.

The report indicated Mathis was in Alachua County. Mathis, according to authorities, also had a felony warrant from Georgia on unrelated burglary charges.

Deputies were not able to find Mathis at the location provided in Alachua County but continued to investigate and learned he may have traveled to the Bronson area of Levy County, Florida.

With that information in hand, Levy County Sheriff's deputies, and an Alachua County Sheriff's Office SWAT team responded to Bronson at Levy County's request to help find Mathis.

Shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday,  Mathis was seen leaving a home and getting into a red SUV. As SWAT personnel stopped the vehicle, Mathis threatened the driver of the vehicle with a handgun, forcing a SWAT member to shoot him.

Mathis was treated for his wounds and taken to an area hospital.

Meanwhile, Dothan police are said to have been serving a search warrant as these events unfolded and located what are believed to be the remains of the child that prompted the search for Mathis.

Further details on the child's death have not been made available at this point.

After his release from the hospital, Mathis will be booked in the Levy County Jail on charges of aggravated assault, held for his warrant in Georgia, as well as the outcome of the homicide investigation in Dothan
