TROY, AL (WSFA) - A 77-year-old man has died after an incident in a private pond in Troy Tuesday.

According to Troy Police Chief Randall Barr, John Lewis Foster was fishing with his friend, a 69-year-old man, in a private pond in the 1500 block of Pike County Road 7708. Around 11:15 a.m., the unidentified friend told police he and Foster were in the boat when Foster mentioned he did not feel well.

As the two were trying to bring the boat onto shore it capsized, the friend said, causing both men to fall into the water. The friend, who was wearing a life jacket, was able to swim to the shore.

Because his cell phone fell into the water, the friend told police he had to walk to his truck and drive to a nearby residence for help.

Dive teams from the Pike County Sheriff's Department and Opp Fire and Rescue were called to assist in locating Foster. Foster's body was recovered near the capsized vessel, about fifty yards from the shoreline.

Foster was not wearing a life jacket, police said.

The investigation into this incident remains ongoing.
