MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Metro Fitness has been open for 19 years. But it did not happen without surviving the economic ups and downs.

Leigh Anne Richards, the managing partner of Metro Fitness, said her business went through a difficult time.

"'08 was horrible. It was awful, and just to know we've come through that, because it was tough," Richards said.

Now the owner says this year is one of her most profitable years. She said more people at  the gym are requesting personal trainers, so she started hiring.

"This is definitely a better economy so therefore we're getting to hire more people," Richards said. "We're getting to give a few raises and do stuff like that."

Increased consumer confidence is one factor affecting the unemployment rate. Higher consumer confidence means businesses are growing, expanding and hiring more people.

Melissa Warnke is the spokeswoman for Alabama Retail Association said the condition of Alabama retail-related jobs is the best it has been since the early 2000s.

"The reason for that is just the economy itself is looking good right now," Warnke said. "People are feeling more confident."

This means there is more money in people's pockets so they can spend more.

"They have more discretionary spending, and so they are able to go into stores, have higher spending power," Warnke said.

This results in retailers hiring more qualified people at higher wages.
