Police Major Mows Yard in Uniform for a Neighbor

Last week Rodney Smith Jr. founder of Raising Men Lawn Care Service Huntsville visited Montgomery during his national tour and mowed yards to help others. Rodney, we think you may have started a craze in our department. Major Wheeler found a lawn mower while on Park, Walk, and Talk and began mowing a resident's yard! Way to go, Major!

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Maj. Wheeler of the Montgomery Police Department began mowing down crime during a Park, Walk and Talk session Thursday.

Park, Walk and Talk is a program being adopted by police departments across the U.S. that requires officers to spend time out of their vehicles, spending time with residents.

The idea behind the initiative is to increase personal interaction with community members, finding ways to better serve the surrounding areas.

A video posted to the Montgomery Police Department's Facebook page shows Wheeler and other officers in one such session, but instead of simply talking to the residents of one home, Wheeler found a lawn mower and began cutting the grass.

The police department is giving credit for the idea to Rodney Smith, Jr. who visited Montgomery last week, mowing yards for elderly residents.

"We think you may have started a craze in our department," they said to Smith in the Facebook post.

"Way to go, Major!" it said.
