DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - The heat isn't giving any of us a break, but if you're in the Dothan area and need a place to cool off, city leaders are urging you to head to a recreation center.
"If they get too hot and they need to get out the heat of the day they're welcome to come in if they need to," said Dothan City Manager Mike West.
Westgate, Wiregrass, Andrew Belle, Walton Park, and Doug Tew will be open until 9 p.m. Thursday and 6 p.m. Friday.
"Their utilities are not functioning properly, those people can go to the cooling stations. They can sit there, relax and enjoy the air conditioning," said Dothan Fire Captain Stephen Messer. "Take care of yourself and your children. You're at the park and see everybody's getting a little hot, come in and let them stay there 45 minutes to an hour relaxing and letting your body kind of re-balance itself."
Some locations have chairs set up in the lobby and others have rooms.
In this extreme heat, you're also advised to be sure you're staying hydrated.
"As much as we like sweet tea here, today might be a good day for some water," said Messer.
Fire officials say if you're feeling uncomfortable, come to the cooling station. If you're feeling ill because of the heat, call 911.
City leaders say they will monitor temps and discuss if hours need be extended and facilities.
