MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Imagine this scenario. You've waited all year long for that summer vacation. Then you leave for your trip and realize you've been scammed.

"We've had a lot of people show up at the airport and their charter flight doesn't exist," said David Smitherman with the Better Business Bureau in Alabama. "Or they will arrive at their hotel and they have no reservation for them."

Sadly this happens a lot. You're all ready for the surf and sand, and it turns out to a disaster. There are some things you need to think about when booking online.

"Try to avoid searching real broad categories like 'the best deals' because you don't know what kind of site you'll end up on," Smitherman said.

Smitherman also says once you book your trip, go ahead and double check your reservations. He says it never hurts to call the hotel and the airline and make sure they have your spot reserved. If you can pay with a credit card. You do have some protection under the Consumer Credit Card Act. A lot of times if you protest and illegitimate charge you can get your money back.

If you have questions and want to report a scam, you can contact the Better Business Bureau in Central and South Alabama and they can help you out.
