SAMSON, AL (WSFA) - A 2-year-old is in stable condition after being airlifted to a Pensacola hospital for surgery over the weekend for a gunshot wound.
Investigators in Samson, located in Geneva County, were called to a report of a child being shot around midnight Sunday.
First responders found the child with a bullet wound that started in his back and went all the way through his front.
The Alabama State Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist. A preliminary investigation found a boy between ages 5 and 6 climbed to the top of a cabinet where he picked up a .32 caliber pistol.
An adult was in the home but was cleaning in the bathroom, according to investigators.
The older child shot the 2-year-old while the adult was out of the room, investigators said.
The district attorney's office has been briefed but no charges are expected to be filed.
