1 inmate dead, another faces charges after stabbing at AL prison

BARBOUR CO., AL (WSFA) - An inmate is dead, and another inmate is facing charges after a stabbing at an Alabama Department of Corrections Facility Tuesday.

According to ADOC, around 4:45 p.m officials found Alonzo Muntez Sykes, 29, unresponsive inside his dorm at the Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton. Sykes had been stabbed multiple times.

Officials say medical staff administered CPR, but Sykes succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by a physician at 5 p.m.

Steven Allen Moore, 33, was identified as a suspect and officials say they recovered a weapon used in the stabbing.

The motive for the stabbing is unknown.

Sykes was serving a 20-year sentence on a 2008 first-degree robbery conviction in Jefferson County. Moore was sentenced to 20 years in 2005 after being convicted of distributing a controlled substance in Morgan County.

The ADOC says this is the fourth inmate killed in one of its facilities in 2018.
