DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Sammy Frichter has been a household name for Wiregrass baseball for the past few decades.
After a successful career coaching the Wallace Governors, Frichter moved to the AAU ranks where he currently serves as head coach of the Wiregrass Cardinals.
"I saw the need for high school players to learn the game of baseball, to respect the game, to play at the right way," said Frichter.
Frichter began the Cardinals program in 2004 and has seen tremendous success in a short amount of time.
"I expected to have success because there's a lot of good players in the Wiregrass," said Frichter.
Seven national championships and various other titles later, the Wiregrass Cardinals are one of the most decorated AAU teams in Alabama.
"This thing just escalated," said Frichter. "In 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010, we only had one team. Then we started with two teams. Then we went with three teams. Now we have four teams."
The Cardinals 17U team is also in the middle of an impressive streak as they just captured their fourth straight national title earlier this month.
"It's been like that old song, 'Magic Carpet Ride,'" said Frichter. "I told Doc this year that three in a row is pretty good, but you have to get four because you got to catch up with coach Saban. He laughed at me and said, 'We're going to pass Saban.'"
As for when Frichter will hang up his cleats?
"When they put me in a pine box, that will be it," said Frichter.
