LUVERNE, AL (WSFA) - If it's in the South, we can fry it. Fried chicken has been a staple in the Deep South for years. Seems like everyone's "mama" has the best recipe, but when it comes to restaurants, who makes the best?
Simply Southern TV held a Facebook voting competition, and we have a winner.
"We're still doing it the same way we did when it started back in 1968," said Michael Money, co-owner of the Chicken Shack in Luverne.
The Chicken Shack opened in the late 60's and about 20 years ago the Money family took over. One thing they agree on right away, the chicken recipe is here to stay.
"The chicken is great," said Drew Money, co-owner of the Chicken Shack. "We have a little secret that's been around for quite a few years."
"It's a salt-based marinade," said Michael. "We put some other things into that too, but we won't go into that though."
Simply Southern TV identified some of the best chicken joints in the state. You can see it's like the March Madness bracket for chicken. A lot of the eight finalists were from right here in the WSFA 12 viewing area.
In the end, it came down to Luverne's Chicken Shack and Grady's Red's Little School House. Both are excellent and both got a lot of votes, but in the end, the Chicken Shack received more than 12,000 votes to claim the title. It was already a busy place, now there's some frantic frying going on to keep up with demand.
"We had to call our poultry guy back three times in one week, actually twice in one day," said Michael.
So while they'd love to sit around and celebrate, it's back to the kitchen, doing what they do best, making fried chicken.
