DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - A Virginia man is in custody following an armed robbery of a store in Dothan and an altercation with the store manager.

Kyle Dustin Head, 26, of Zion Crossroads, Virginia, is charged with first-degree robbery. Police said he tried to steal a pair of boots from Tractor Supply off West Main Street Wednesday evening. Head put on the new pair of boots, put his old pair of boots in a box, and then tried to leave the store.

The manager of the store confronted him and the two started fighting. During the struggle, police said Head brandished a knife. The manager was able to knock the knife out of Head's hand and hold him down until police arrived.

While police don't typically advise that you become physical with a suspect, they said the manager handled the situation as best he could.

"In this particular case, I think he handled it well. He was doing what he was supposed to do and trying to stop him from stealing the boots - at which point Mr. Head kind of rushed him and I think he had no other choice, but to defend himself," said Dothan Police Lt. Lynn Watkins.

The manager suffered bruising to the face and other minor injuries.

Head is being held on no bond.
