MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Central Alabama CrimeStoppers and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are partnering up once again to get guns off River Region school grounds.

During the 2016-2017 school year, the CrimeStoppers Scholastic Initiative collaborated with the ATF to offer rewards of up to $500 for any tips that led to the confiscation of a gun on school grounds. This included school-sanctioned events.

"Our statistics show that once the school year begins, we receive numerous tips," CrimeStoppers Executive Director Tony Garrett said. "As the school year continues, calls decrease and school resource officers report lesser incidents involving guns on campus."

The initiative, according to CrimeStoppers, has confiscated 20 handguns and 11 replica pellet/BB guns from students on school campuses.

To report a gun in a River Region school, call the CrimeStoppers hotline at 215-STOP.

Anonymous tips can also be sent by texting "CACS" plus your message to CRIMES (274637) or to the CrimeStoppers Facebook page.

To schedule an appointment to discuss in detail how the reward program works and how it can be implemented into your school system, please call Tony Garrett at 334-777-8116 or email at
