SLOCOMB, AL (WSFA) - Slocomb's Fire Department is raising money to purchase a complete radio system for all firefighters with the department.
"We have new members of the department now and they need radios for when calls come in," said Chief Adrian Thomas.
Chief Thomas says they are looking to purchase at least five new P-25 radios - which cost roughly $600.
Jeremy Pritchett has worked with the Slocomb Fire Department for 13 years. He says the radio system is a key piece of equipment for firefighters.
"When you're in a house fire, you have to communicate with who is outside to let them know you're okay," said Pritchett.
Chief Thomas says not having a complete radio system isn't just dangerous for the firefighter without the equipment.
"We've had situations where people were inside and we had to send somebody in to get them out because they had no communication," said Thomas, "You're putting more people in dangerous situations - makes it more dangerous for everybody."
Friday and Saturday firefighters will host a boot drive off Lawrence Harris Highway to raise money for the radios. They will be out there from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. collecting money from drivers.
"Big Mike" Reeves pulled over his John Deere tractor to donate.
"These people help me - I know that all I have to do is call and they'll be there," he said.
If you'd like to donate, but won't be in the area during the fundraiser, you can d rop off or mail a donation to the station. It's located at 324 S State Highway 103 Slocomb, Al 36375.
