ST. CLAIR CO., AL (WSFA) - An inmate at the St. Clair Correctional Facility in Springville is dead after a fatal stabbing Sunday evening, according to the Alabama Department of Corrections.

An investigation into the death of inmate Terry Pettiway, 29, is underway.

Prison officials report the stabbing happened at approximately 6:45 p.m. when correctional officers found Pettiway unresponsive and suffering from a stab wound. The inmate was taken to an area hospital where he died from his injuries.

Pettiway was serving a 10-year sentence on a 2013 conviction for discharging a gun in an occupied building and vehicle in Montgomery County.

Another inmate has been identified by DOC investigators as a suspect but his name is not being released at this time. DOC says the circumstances that led to the fatal stabbing remain unclear.
