MILLBROOK, AL (WSFA) - Bill Dismukes heard his five dogs barking up a storm early Monday morning but didn't think much of it at the time. But they kept barking.

Dismukes stepped out onto his deck and noticed a shadowy figure near his basement door.

'Charlie', a 60-pound English Setter, chased the robbery suspect away and in doing so got stabbed. The dog needed 20 stitches on his side. The vet said the animal's rib cage saved him.

At one point, the suspect was inside Dismukes' home before the dogs began barking. He ended stealing a pistol, $10 in cash and an Alabama belt buckle.

Charlie is expected to make a full recovery.

There have been no arrests made in the case at this point.
