SELMA, AL (WSFA) - The Selma Police Department is conducting a "saturation detail" in the George Washington Carver Housing Complex in response to a recent ambush of officers at the complex.
A saturation detail is a tactic in which a large number of officers are concentrated in one area. The department is assisted by about 40 state and federal officers with SBI, the Attorney General's Office, 4th Judicial Drug Task Force and ATF. There is also air support from State Trooper Aviation.
Chief Spencer Collier said the detail will continue until the department regains complete officer safety and community safety in the complex. He said most residents have been appreciative of the additional officers.
Collier said on Monday officers were lured into George Washington Carver Housing Complex - responding to a 911 call. Collier says the suspect or suspects saw the patrol vehicle and started shooting. He said it's the sixth time in his 18 months with the department that officers have been ambushed there.
At least five drug arrests have been made Thursday night, and a person was arrested in a vehicle pursuit. The department has also made three gun arrests.
