WADLEY, Ala. --  Authorities in Randolph County are still trying to determine why a group of men fired gunshots onto an outdoor basketball court Saturday, killing star Wadley High School football running back Terrance Wilkes and injuring his cousin.

Five men were arrested Sunday and charged with murder and assault.

Sheriff's investigator Jimmy Holmes said yesterday that Wilkes, who was 18, was killed when two vehicles drove up to the court and several men got out and started firing different weapons, striking Wilkes and his cousin, Jasper Buchanan.

Holmes said Wilkes and Buchanan were not playing basketball when the shooting occurred.

Investigators are also trying to determine if the shots were fired randomly or if Wilkes and Buchanan were the intended victims.

Wadley High School principal Todd Wilson said counselors were at the school Monday morning to help students who were upset by the death of Wilkes. The senior rushed for more than two-thousand yards and 35 touchdowns this season, capping a nine-thousand-688-yard, 152-touchdown career.

Holmes said he expects Buchanan, who was taken to a Birmingham hospital, to recover.
