Woman killed in Opelika apartment fire

OPELIKA, AL (WSFA) - An early morning apartment fire in Opelika has claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman.

Firefighters were called to the apartments at 515 Fox Run Parkway around 4:45 Thursday morning after a tenant reported heavy smoke.

Firefighters discovered and quickly extinguished the blaze in another apartment and discovered the body of Ms. Annie Price Thrash on the living room floor.

Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced Ms. Thrash dead on the scene about an hour later.

Investigators say the fire seemed to be contained to the one area in the living room, with heavy smoke and heat damage throughout the home.

Thrash's body was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for further investigation, though Harris says foul play is not suspected at this time.

It is currently unknown how the fire started and an investigation continues.
