Honeysuckle Middle School implements new book bag policy

DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Students at Honeysuckle Middle School are getting new book bags this year. The school is requiring students to use clear book bags as part of a new policy to improve safety, and the school is providing them.
Last year, two students brought guns to school. Principal LaTesha Weatherington says she's thankful they haven't had any tragedies, and she wants to do whatever she can to protect students and staff.
"It could've been a lot worse, but it's all about building relationships with students and having that relationship with them where they can trust you and come to you and tell you if something is wrong or if something's being done that's not right. I'm very proud of our students and staff here that they have built those relationships," Weatherington said.
"We're excited to see how it works. This is being piloted there at Honeysuckle, and it's something we've seen from other school systems and other places. A lot of places do have a policy like that in place, so we're going to see how it works for us and if it's something that should be replicated in Dothan," said Dothan City Schools Superintendent Charles Ledbetter.
The book bags will be given out at orientation on Aug. 6 and 10. Any student who doesn't attend will be provided one on the first day of school, Aug. 12.
The school will also hold a parent information session after orientation on Aug. 6 and 10 at 5:30.
