DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Wallace Community College is celebrating the groundbreaking of a new health science building.

Ground prep work started over the summer and construction is coming along.

The building will be 98,371 square feet and three stories high with three wings. It will have computer labs and simulation tools to teach students using real life scenarios.

The new health sciences building will house seven health programs including nursing. The building is expected to be completed by 2016.

"Our credit health care programs will be housed in that one building in which we believe will be wonderful for learning because of the centergy created by them being together," said Wallace Community College President Dr. Linda Young.

Dothan, state and school leaders think this addition will attract more health professionals to the city and the state.

"Healthcare is the number one engine for economic development, and it's creating an incredible future for all of us in the Wiregrass, and I'm proud of Wallace's commitment to that," said Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz.

"This area is the hub of healthcare for this part of the country. North Florida and South Georgia and of course the southeastern part of Alabama," said Gov. Robert Bentley.

Mercedes Sheffield is a WCC student from Georgia studying radiology technology.

"They don't offer this in my area in Georgia so I wanted to do this, and I want to work in Alabama. I'm actually thinking about moving to Alabama," Sheffield said.
