SELMA, AL (WSFA) - The Selma Police Department has released the name of the Selma City School employee who was struck and killed Thursday afternoon.

Michael C. King, 49, was struck by a vehicle near a dumpster behind R.B. Hudson Middle School between 2 and 3 p.m. He was taking trash to the dumpster at the time of the crash.

Lt. Sam Miller said an elderly woman was driving the vehicle and her brakes failed. She reportedly tried to use the emergency brake, but her vehicle still didn't stop. King died at Vaughan Regional Medical Center from his injuries.

The crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Selma Superintendent Dr. Angela Mangum says King was a child nutrition program custodian at the school and had worked in the school district for nearly 22 years. He had also worked at Edgewood Elementary and Selma High School.

Mangum said King was beloved by everyone, and this is a huge loss for the entire school district. King often worked the "snack" line and interacted with the students daily.

Additional counselors were assigned to the middle school Friday to talk with students and staff.

King was married with three children.
