TROY, AL (WSFA) - A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Troy on Tuesday morning for a new animal shelter.

The Pike Animal Shelter will serve the cities of Troy and Brundidge and Pike County as a whole. All three entities are partnering with the Pike County Humane Society to operate it.

"It has been important to me and so many others for many years and we just, you know, they never gave up," said Troy Mayor Jason Reeves. "The humane society, the pike animal shelter coalition and so many others were willing to say this needs to be done; we need to serve the animal population and the citizens that those animals mean so much to, we need to serve them better."

Mayor Reeves added that the goal of the shelter isn't just to house animals but help them find homes.

Something new for this shelter is that it will house both dogs and cats.

"That's something new, we've always done dogs, but this is a first time for cats," Mayor Reeves said.

Completion is projected for late summer or early fall of 2016.
