Auburn City School System sees big bump in enrollment

AUBURN, AL (WSFA) - The Auburn City School System is experiencing some major growth in enrollment. They are moving forward with short and long-term plans to accommodate the increase.
This year, more than 8,500 students are enrolled in Auburn City Schools. Superintendent Karen Delano says this is the first time they have surpassed that number.
Growth has not come without a cost, though. With 260 additional students from last year, the schools are busting at the seams. Several elementary schools are already over capacity.
Richland Road Elementary is just one school where portable classrooms have been brought in to create extra space. They are aware this is only a short-term solution as the city continues to grow.
"A new elementary school has been on that plan since we produced the plan. We have decided we should move it up a year," said Delano. "Growth is a good thing for a thriving community. People want to live in Auburn. We have to move a little faster than we normally would."
Several months ago, the board purchased some property for the new elementary school. Delano hopes to present her recommendations to the board before the end of the year.
Construction for the new Auburn City Schools High School is already underway and is on schedule to be completed next year.
