Gov. Bentley unapologetic about education system 'sucks' comment

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - Governor Robert Bentley is not backing down from his harsh description of the state's education system.

On Wednesday, Bentley said the state's education system "sucks" while speaking to the Alabama Association of Regional Councils.

"Our education system in this state sucks," Bentley said during his speech. "I don't use that term very much but I want to tell you this: when we are 51st on our NAEP (Nations Report Card) scores in 4th-grade math in this state, that's pretty sad and it's intolerable."

On Thursday, Bentley said he has no regrets and is glad his comment has people talking.

"I'm not apologetic about what I said but I do want to say this, we have some great teachers who really want to teach and I'm not blaming this on our teachers at all but there are some changes that are coming in this state," Bentley said. "We are going to have to make changes cause the status quo is unacceptable."
