MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - A Hayneville man is facing assault charges after documents say he assaulted a Montgomery police officer.

Melvin Smith, 30, is charged with assault second-degree, and obstructing justice using a false identity.

Court documents say the charges are related to an incident that happened on Friday around 4 p.m. in the parking lot of the Home Depot, located on the Eastern Boulevard. During the incident, Smith gave an officer false identification to avoid being arrested. Smith then assaulted the officer while the officer was attempting to perform his duties.

The officer received multiple cuts and bruises during the incident, documents indicate.

Smith was taken to the Montgomery County Detention Facility under a $30,000 bond.
