MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

A woman whose job specialized in assisting medical patients has been charged with identity theft, according to the Dothan Police Department.

Dothan Police say Malika Shanta Oliver, 40, is charged with trafficking stolen identities.

An investigation revealed Oliver was employed by a company called MedAssist which specializes in assisting medical patients with insurance eligibility. As part of her employment, Oliver had access to a large volume of patient demographics.

Police say investigators recovered evidence that Oliver was illegally using patient information to open multiple lines of credit. Multiple victims have been identified and each person that was compromised will be contacted by an investigator.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of this data breach is encouraged to obtain a credit report to ensure their information has not been used.

The Southeast Alabama Medical Center is fully cooperating with the investigation.

Oliver will be transferred to the Houston County Jail. Bond will be set at a later date.
