Back to school giveaway events around the River Region
MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - There were multiple events going on over the weekend around the River Region to get kids ready for school.
From book bag drives, to block parties, and even free hair cuts, there was something for everyone.
On Saturday morning, a group of trainers from Train the Right Way LLC were giving away 75 free backpacks filled with school supplies at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. However, in order to receive a free backpack for their kids, the parents had to participate in a 20-minute workout.
"Even though the only incentive is you coming out here to workout, initially this helps you," said event coordinator Jakia Jones. "It's pretty much us helping who's in our community and showing that we are here to help."
Right down the road, another giveaway event was going on at Borne Generation Church. The pastor there, who is also a barber, gave kids in need free haircuts.
"I think it'll not only improve the attention span in classrooms, but also give that child a fresh start. Some children are very self-conscious, so giving them a free haircut may improve themselves and they will also look good while doing it," said Borne Generation Pastor Vincent Lindsey.
Lindsey runs his own barbershop out of the church, and discovered his love of cutting hair back in high school.
"I started off cutting hair in the locker room in high school. I played sports, so I was the guy that cut hair in the locker room before the game so everyone could look good," Lindsey said.
Some kids started school back on Friday while others will begin either next Wednesday or later on.
