Alabama State introduces new head men’s basketball coach Tuesday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Alabama State University officially introduced Chris Wright as its new men’s head basketball coach during a news conference Tuesday afternoon.

ASU says Wright is a proven winner and has turned around a lot of struggling programs in his career. That includes Langston University, where Wright inherited a Lions team that had a dismal 2021-22 season with a record 1-27. The new coach’s team finished his first season 31-3.

Wright also had success coaching at Talladega College.

An HBCU going to the NAIA National Title game has only happened twice since 1987. Wright hold the distinction of having been the head coach of both teams.

Now, he’s moving into his next chapter, this time with ASU. He says he’s excited to lead the Hornets and that his expectation is to win.

Wright takes over for Tony Madlock, who announced in March that he was stepping down after four years with the program.
