TUSKEGEE, AL (WSFA) - Students at Booker T. Washington High School in Tuskegee celebrated the end of finals by giving back to the community in a very big way.

It was all hands on deck as more than 500 students participated in the inaugural BTW day of service on Thursday.

"We are going to the VA, church feeding programs [and] to the elders center. Whatever we can do to be a positive impact and make a positive impact on the community, that's what we are going to to do," said BTW Principal Brelinda Sullen.

"I see the people passing by and they are smiling and waving and it feels good. I am helping my school and helping my community," Kamiiya Sutton, BTW student.

By completing these different service projects, the goal is to have these students take what they learn in the classroom, through character education, and apply it.

"This day of service will cause them to believe that, hey what I do makes a difference in the world. My behaviors and my action and the little bit I can
do can make a difference," said Dr. Carolyn Bettis, BTW Library Media Specialist.

Already, students hope their actions strike a chord in others to be agents of change.

"It is going to inspire others to do it. This will give others a vision so they can do it too. Hopefully they will say BTW is doing it, so we will do it to
for our community too," said Kamiyah Person, BTW Student.

"You are the most happiest when you do for others and that is what we are striving to do," said Sullen.

The administration at Booker T. Washington High School is working to make this day of service a tradition. The goal is to have one at the end of each semester during the school year.
