Notasulga, AL (WSFA) - Youth For Christ volunteers from Fort Wayne, IN, not only spruced up Notasulga High School in Macon County but also unknowingly brought a touch of comfort and healing, too.

More than 50 volunteers made the 12-hour one-way drive to the school to help clean up the property. Once in Alabama, the volunteers learned about the tragic death of 18-year old senior Rameshe Weaver.

Weaver died last Friday after school when her car slammed into the rear of an 18-wheeler on Highway 80 between Tuskegee and Lee County.

"It's probably encouraging to see more people here helping them out and the time we're going to have this afternoon. The fun can be healing as well for rough times, and we're glad to be here for the whole school," said head volunteer Dan Baker.

While the school mourned the loss of Weaver, Baker and his volunteers spent the better part of two days giving the school an impressive cleaning.

"There is always a lot of painting and landscaping to do. We put in a new walkway up front, we helped convert the soccer room into a weight room for the football team, painting the locker room and reading to some of the elementary school students," Baker said.

Baker estimates they performed a minimum of $10,000 of free labor for Notasugla High School.

Baker says they will wrap up their work at Notasulga High School Wednesday and head back to Indiana.
