New SROs ready to step in at Lee County schools
LEE COUNTY, AL (WSFA) - Students in the Lee County school system aren't too far away from being back in the classroom and the Lee County Sheriff's Office wants to make sure that they are entering a safe learning environment.
Lee County School Resource Officers have been training all summer making sure that they are up-to-date on all of the latest safety and security methods to keep students safe during this upcoming school year.
"We currently have a staff of 10 sworn deputy sheriffs who are specially trained as school resource officers. They work in direct contact with our school administrators, with the parents, and of course, with the students every day in the schools during the school year," said Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones. "They are assigned to a specific school, that is what they do, that's it. We do specific training with our school resource officer's during the summer. They actually do interactive training with the school staff on active shooter situations, response to emergency situations - say for instance a weather related disaster - anything that would affect the operation of the school."
Jones said that Lee County SROs also work closely with both Auburn and Opelika police.
