MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) - More pets are lost on the Fourth of July than on any other day of the year, but local animal shelters are working to reunite pets and owners.

Although no animal lover wants to lose a pet, the noise and commotion of firework shows can often terrify pets, causing them to run away, Humane Society official said.

According to Lea Turbert of the Montgomery Humane Society, microchips are the easiest way to return a lost pet to its owner, but often pets do not have the microchips meaning the process is a bit more complicated.

If you have lost a pet, the best thing to do is contact your local animal shelter, providing as much information as you can about your lost pet including their age, breed, color, and size. Remember a picture if possible.

The Montgomery Humane Society can be reached 334-409-0622 and has a Facebook page dedicated to reuniting pets and owners.

Even though there are large efforts to return pets, Turbert explained that there are some simple ways to keep pets comfortable and at home during fireworks.

"We've seen dogs that have climbed over fences, through the fences… cats that have done the same thing," she said. "So the best thing to do is keep your pets inside on the Fourth of July."

She advised owners to leave their pets inside with a TV or radio on to help cover the noise of the fireworks and to let the pets go where they feel safe within the house.
