MONTGOMERY CO., AL (WSFA) - It's that time of year. Less than a month before kids head back to school. If you don't want that last week to be crazy, there are some things you can do right now to get your kids ready.

I've been doing some of the same stuff. I had to find an original birth certificate, blue, immunization card, and two documents to show proof of residency to get our kindergartners registered. Everyone has a lot to do.

Anchor and reporter Judd Davis contacted the Montgomery Public School system so we could get you a quick checklist before we head back to school.

  • First off make sure to take advantage of the tax-free weekend which starts July 20th and runs through July 22nd. Here's a link for a list of things that are covered.
  • If you're looking for uniform and supply lists, you can find every school website here.
  • You can also download the Montgomery Public School system app by searching for MPS-AL and you can choose the schools you want to follow.

It's also important to get back into that school routine at least a week before school begins.

"Bedtime, wake time, even a study time should be set," said Tom Salter with the Montgomery Public School system. "Have your child read aloud to you. For younger students, have them color or work on their letters and numbers and parents read to them during study time. Also, have a specific place where studying takes place; preferable in an area where there or few distractions (no cell phone) and where the parent can observe work being done."

Also, school officials say parents need to be proactive and make sure to meet your child's teacher, get their email address for future questions, and join the PTA so you can stay involved.

Hope these tips help. That first school bell will be ringing before you know it.
