MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Dwight Floyd was in the midst of the chaos in downtown Montgomery Saturday night, bullets whizzing past his head as he fled.

“That’s pure evil, it’s pure evil,” he said. “I was running, I thought to myself there’s too much gunfire, so just get down,” he recalls. “So many people falling over you.”

As Floyd thinks back to the night, he remembers the shooters had no regard for the safety of others in the crowd, some of whom appeared to be very young.

“People’s kids, ages from 10 and under, I knew I saw kids that small,” he said. “There’s a carnival right there, so of course there’s kids out.”

While Floyd does believe laws can play a role in preventing these types of tragedies, he says the root of the problem lies with parenting.

“Guns kill faster than anything, how is it so easy for us to get them?” Floyd questions. “It’s not going to start with the law, it’s going to start with in-house laws and rules.”

Floyd adds that he came downtown because there were so many people out and he wanted to join the fun, but that night of fun turned into something he described as a “warzone” that he’s thankful to have survived.

“I’m here, so I’m more thankful than anything,” Floyd said.
