MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - Montgomery County has opened its new public storm shelter after the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for multiple counties in central Alabama Tuesday.

The watch will remain in effect until 6 p.m., and officials are urging people stay alert and be prepared as severe weather conditions develop.

The Montgomery County Storm Shelter, located at the Flatwood Community Center (360 Williams Dr.), will be open to the public until the National Weather Service lifts the severe weather threat.

Residents, particularly those in mobile homes or structures without dedicated safe rooms, are strongly urged to utilize the storm shelter if needed.

Pets will not be allowed in the shelter.

The Montgomery County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) says it will continue monitoring weather conditions and provide updates as they become available.
