Dothan event involves men wearing heels to raise sexual assault awareness
DOTHAN, AL (WSFA) - Men are signing up to walk a mile in the shoes of women this Saturday.
The first time event is intended to raise awareness for sexual assault victims, and money for the House of Ruth.
The walk is also dedicated to stopping domestic violence.
Registration for the event started Thursday and runs through Saturday.
Men will walk from the intersection of Troy and Foster Street, in Dothan, to the five star credit union and back-in high heels.
"Everybody is there to support House of Ruth; everybody is there to support awareness for this terrible thing that happens around us," Rich Merrell said.
"If you really think about the problem, only men can stop sexual violence. There's really nothing a victim of sexual assault can do to prevent themselves from being sexually assaulted or raped. But men by their actions, by the way they treat women, by the way they raise their sons, by the way they interact with their peers and co workers; they set the example of a positive way to interact with women," said Beverly Youse, House of Ruth Executive Director.
The march begins at 10 a.m. with registration beginning at 8:30 a.m. A $35 registration fee includes a pair of high heels in your size.
All proceeds go to benefit the Dothan Area House Of Ruth.
Women are invited to walk also.
